Chocolate Chess Pie

Chocolate chess pie is close relative to a classic chess piebut obviously has chocolate in it as well as a few other interchangeable ingredients. It is essentially and sugar, milk, and egg pie that is baked inside a homemade pie crust.

This traditional southern pie is often showcased in BBQ restaurants across the country and believe it or not, is very easy to make at home as well.

How to Make It

Follow these simple instructions for how to make a chocolate chess pie:

Form your homemade pie crust to a pie pan, or in my case a cast iron skillet with a fluted edge.

Chef notes + tips

  • If you like a thicker pie, you can double the filling recipe and set it in a deep fluted pie pan and bake for an additional 45-60 minutes.
  • You do not have to use a cast-iron skillet like I did, feel free to use a standard 9” pie pan.

First, I do not eat sweets. However, my wife, a real sweet eater, saw this recipe and decided she would make it. Today she made it for family dinner.
After dinner she plated pie for my Son, my Granddaughter, our neighbor and my herself. I sat back and watched the reaction.
Smiles all around. Comments like, “this is delicious”, “OMG this is good”, “we are making this again”. I asked, “so you like it?” Smiles all around. I then asked for them to rate from 1 to 5. It was a 5.
My wife also commented that it is so easy to make.
