CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Currently the only Mikvah serving the Crown Heights women has been standing since the early 1950’s and residents say has been extremely overwhelmed with the expansion and growth of Crown Heights. Now a new initiative by members of the Beis Shmuel Shul is being undertaken to build a new one.

The current Mikvah was built by Rabbi Moshe Twersky-Schneerson in the early 1950’s, and the Friediker Rebbe had correspondence with him before leaving Russia asking “if it was worth settling in Crown Heights.”

Residents have been very frustrated with the current Mikvah not being available and its age which has been showing for quite some time, and initiatives to renovate it were met with resistance. some woman opted to use the Mivkahs of nearby neighborhoods such as Brooklyn Heights and Flatbush.

The lot is located on the corner of Troy and Lefferts Avenue, and is one of the furthest edges in Crown Heights, and will serve as an encouragement for the Expansion of the neighborhood and the community.

The cost of the construction is estimated to be between $500,000 and $750,000 and is expected to be completed within a year. Current plans include two Mikvah baths and six “prep rooms” for each, and the Mikvah is being dedicated it name of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson.

Shloime Klein of Mr. Greens and one of the owners of the lot told CrownHeights.info “we are selling them the lot for a significantly reduced price for the betterment of the community.” And added that this will be amongst the few Mosdos that have been achieved by the community for the community, without outside help.

  • well done!

Great news for all the young marrieds living south of Empire. It’s an expanding area. My only question is, how can it be private with so many Jewish homes next door, behind, & opposite? Oh well, i guess the architects will figure that out.

  • Srulik

Excuse me, but this is not a “lot”. It is merely a small sliver of property created by the fact that Lefferts and Empire are not parallel and meet one block east. Let’s see how planning and zoning go. Selling at a “significantly reduced price”? Perhaps. Maybe it’s because, except for a few parking spots, the “lot” is not truly buildable.

  • EXCITED CH

    MAZAL TOV…

  • crown heights mommy!!!

wow it’s about time great job!!

  • Not great place for privacy

Great idea…but far from private. There are many homes that have direct view of that corner, many by just looking down from their window. There’s a Jewish condo building right on top of this “lot”!!!

  • ch mikvah

the union street mikvah is in the process of expanding.

  • C H

I’ll be long gone when the process is over!!!

  • privacy

To all you worried about privacy, the mikvah on albany and union is not private either, you have bochurim walking there ALL the time!

  • Crown Heights resident

Years ago Rabbi Z.S. Dworkin had Rabbi Fischer keep the property on Albany Ave. (opposite the Mikva) from being developed. This was done to afford privacy to the Mikva. (It so happens that the old building has since been demolished, and the lot stands vacant to this day.) Building a Women’s Mikva nestled into a Jewish condominium development is certainly something that the Rabbonim have to consulted on.

PS. Getting a Mikva built isn’t always that easy. How’s Boymelgreen’s Oholei Torah Mikva progressing (it surely must be near completion by now)!

  • Chana

    it’s about time.

union mikvah has been ‘expanding’ for decades.
so has the community, at a much more rapid pace.

I personally feel safer that it’s in a public area.
the thought of building far out makes it less safe for walking at night.

  • shagalow scam

What a SCAM the property at the largest point is 14 ft
how wil you build on it this is just a SCAM to rais money for someones benefit.

and should be called mitzvah habo baavairah
you build to obstract the neighbors ?

but dont worry it is not lmaase to build just lhalocho

  • T.

    Wonderful News!

  • someone that knows

the 3rd paragraph is such lies.
the mikvah still looks very nice and there are no women traveling to other neighborhoods on the contrary there are other women that come specially to use this mikva
just remember that this is the mikvah that the rebbe used

  • Finally...

    At last!
    But some concerns:
“Private”- Hardly, with all those apt. buildings staring right at it.
“Outskirts”- That location is more central these days than the Union St. one!
    Great job anyway.

  • Elki

Kol HaKavod to Beis Shmuel for once again embarking on a project for the benefit of the entire CH.

  • Union resident

“Crown Heights Resident”- so what. How does having that scrubby empty lot (a blight on the the neighborhood by the way) make the Union Women’s mikvah private!? It does not! Everyone can see the women going in and out over there. I live in one of the apartment buildings across the empty lot, diagonal to the mikvah. It is so embarrassing to walk past there at night with the women going in and out. I have to keep my head down and scoot by.

  • to Privacy

What’s with all the secrecy about going to the Mikvah. Isn’t it about time we stopped trying to raise our kids (and ourselves) in a bubble? The mikvah and what it stands for is a part of normal Jewish life and is nothing to be ashamed of.

  • calm down

for those that are concerned, the CH rabbonim were consulted and have given their approval. As fo rprivacy , with mr greens , benz, cleaner, leasing direct etc -union street is HARDLY PRIVATE.I wish people would stop being so paranoid- just because someone might see you in that area doesnt mean that you rae going to the mikvah. And if you prefer to use union street- go right ahead

  • trachtgutvetzeingut

why not build it opposite the shuk. there is a very large property there which would accomadate plenty of room for parking .

  • ah poshta yid fuen shcuna

first of all , if someone is doing something right y knock him ? dont u think they know to ask rabboniem , and were do u think woman should go to a mikva in the middel of bed-sty. common ?were ever u go there r people will see u . i lived on union st, years ago ,

  • ah poshta yid fuen shcuna

is 46 th st between 13 –14th ave in the middel of the boon docks ?

  • ah poshta yid fuen shcuna

why not build it opposite the shuk. there is a very large property there which would accomadate plenty of room for parking .

its going to be the heart of crown hights b/4 u know it

  • DallasJew

To all the imbiciles ranting about too small and not private why don’t u guys get off your tuches and get a real job instead of knocking this effort with your pea size observations.
You’d be surprised what can be done on a sliver of a lot these days – alot of new CH families (including many BeisShmuel folks) have wide views and great outlooks – thinking out of the box is whats necessary to advance, grow and expand on all levels.
I commend this move and its great to CH South which is growing my leaps and bounds.
To the one leaving CH – don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Most of us are staying and for good reason.
The grass ain’t green on the other side!

  • lets keep this shchuan going!

    very nice.
    there will always be naysayers…
hopefully now those that havent been going to the mikva will now see this as modern enough place that even they can use.

  • to someone that knows

There certainly are people that go to the mikva in other neighborhoods because they don’t want to go to union st. i know these people personally.

  • a few comments

i dont doubt for a second that rabonim in CH were consulted. my question is how much time did they spend thinking of the pros and cons.

as far as size why cant they make a basem*nt, a sub-basem*nt and 2 floors above ground – this will give them plenty of room and privacy for the ladies INSIDE???

as far as the condo in the mikvah’s back yard if the mikvah is 2 stories it will be very hard to see who is coming and going.

for all the people that still arent happy – what have you done to improve the shechunah?

  • much too small

It’s a huge waste of money because the place is much to small.

The property is only big enough if it was a mikvah for a small bungalow colony but can’t handle the huge number of women who use the mikveh each night.

It’s joke to take our community for ride, where hundreds of women need to toivel each night and give them a place that only has 3 small prep rooms.

We need more like 50 prep rooms.

  • a lot is alot

To all of you with the negative comments

    1. what have you done to make a difference in our community, mikva or elsewhere?
    2. do YOU truly believe that the hard working people behind this project have the same limited imagination as you? Dont judge a book by its cover!
    3. are you the same guys who will be voting for change, because it feels better?

Go do something. Help bring Moshiach, we all need him, NOW!

“its all about the right PH balance”
    Thank you

  • ch resident

to the person asking about BP mikvah location.
when this mikvah was built this location was on the outskirts of boro park. now that bp is so vast, it has become in the center of town.
Also, to the person who is asking what why are we paranoid with no one knowing where we are going, yes, the use of the mikvah is a very private time and no it should not be where every “child” going past should ask questions and know about this. where I come from, the children and friends and relatives do not know and I do not want them to know any details. so please where is the tzinus
